Hartley Consultancy was founded by the Proprietor, Peter Hartley, in 2006 after a long and successful career in Second-Tier and First Tier Prime Contractors in the field of Defence Electronics. Peter decided to utilise his wide-ranging Business Skills with the support of known trusted Consultants and founded the Hartley Consultancy organisation, with the clear intention of helping others overcome personal and business adversities.
Our Principal
Always the entrepreneur, Peter's first successful exercise in consultancy dates back to 1967. In addition, Peter has an enviable track record within Corporate Business, having effected Innovation in many fields, gaining Patents and effecting Order Intake of some £250M. He has travelled extensively around the world, and has proved capable of surviving in somewhat unusual and adverse environments. His travels have taken him to meet General and Ministerial Staff in the UK and globally, whilst also keeping his feet on the ground by carrying out private tuition and mentoring as well as being a Founding Member and Deputy Chairman of the Surrey European Business Association. Being well-versed in, and supportive of, Educational issues, Peter has a reputation of a supportive person who gains personal satisfaction by seeing that others get that 'helping hand'. Now a member of the organisation 'Raw Business', Peter also ran the 'School for Entrepreneurs' in Guildford.
Career Details
As might be expected, Peter has always been an innovator and determined entrepreneur, even during his days at Grammar School (which he left as Top Boy). The son of an Accountant (and former Professional Boxer, and a Mother who had been a Professional Opera Singer), Peter is well-versed in business processes, raised on a small isolated farm and well-used to both manual as well as academic tasks. Peter graduated with a BSc in Physics from Imperial College, London University, and whilst at Decca went on to gain a post-Graduate Certificate of Advanced Electronics Techniques (via day-release) in Kingston College, Surrey and then a Masters Degree in Physics of Electronics (taken during evenings at Chelsea College, London University).
During his career within Racal, a series of specialised courses at the renowned Ashridge Management College aided Peter to take on about every single role with the engineering business cycle, including people, project and programme management, finance, contract negotiation (including legal arguments), company procedures and proposals, international ventures and support, company investigations (internal and external) and technology transfer programmes. Whilst in Racal and subsequently Thales, Peter led many novel projects (from minor projects of £10k up to major programmes of circa £120M) and managed an international team, including Prime Contractors as well as Small-to-Medium Enterprises for a Defence Technology Centre.
Important Notes: In his career, Peter has effected/facilitated Order Intake in excess of £250M – however, his Clients’ Consultancy work details are NEVER publically disclosed. Peter’s trademark is Integrity.
As Peter himself has been quoted, if he wrote a book of his experiences, it would have to be called “You'll Never Believe This”, or else published posthumously (to protect the guilty).

Our Location(s)
Although the main centre of the Business is based near Guildford, Surrey, some Associates are located in Hampshire and Berkshire, and Service Associates in Yorkshire and Cumbria. It really doesn’t matter from the Client’s point of view as to where the Business is based, as Hartley Consultancy has (a) the technology to operate throughout the UK and (b) Peter will ensure that Clients have personal contact, either by Peter or an appropriate Associate travelling to meet the Client (subject to the natural restrictions of the economics of the tasking).
